To be honest, I usually just wash as much as I can off with soap and water, then use petrol or cellulose thinners- it doesn't hurt the paintwork all that much. Should I not be doing that?

Totally agree. Must admit I'm equally guilty of this on more than one occasion. It happens, it shouldn't and would be safer if it didn't but it does.
As for the drinking when pregnant It should be illegal, the child has no choice on the damage being inflicted on it, but will still suffer...
Well I wouldn't really say that we laugh at our politicians for the cause of our survival. It could also mean trouble and worse consequences.
