I have a commuter bike that I recently bought to run errands and travel short distances (two miles max, but perhaps more in the future) and I'm in the market for an appropriate pair of shoes to ride with it (current ones are falling apart). Would it be worth it for a guy like me to purchase biking shoes? If yes, what kind should I get? If not, what kind of shoes should I wear? I'd like them to be shoes that I can also wear OFF my bike when I'm merely walking around the neighborhood.

Get a pair of SPD shoes and pedals. You can get pedals with toe clips and just use any shoe you want. Just get shoes with a smooth sole so they are easier to slide in and out of the toe clips.

You can get Shimano mountain bike shoes for less then $40 and MT-520 pedals for about the same amount. Try Nashbar or Performance Bike.
