I'll be going off to college in the fall and my parents said they'd buy me a bike for school. I currently have some generic Diamondback from Target. I've only ridden it on paved roads, but my college has a mountain biking club that I'm interested in joining (I've been mountain biking only a few times). Sadly, I know very little about mountain biking so I need some help with what to look for so any advice would be appreciated; general advice, or specific bike models. Oh, and my budget probably tops off at $800.
Reflecting on my situation, should I wait to buy a bike until I find out more about the club? I'm not even sure of what terrain they ride on. Maybe that's not important though if I'm a beginner... I'll just stop speculating and hope for some constructive answers =)
