I think it should be outdoors. Indoor/retractable stadiums can host big events like Super Bowls and Final Fours, but the new stadium would likely only get one of each. A roof for the new stadium would cost about $200 million, plus $6 million more to maintain each year than an outdoor stadium. The Metrodome generated about $1.6 million in revenue in 2009 from non NFL events. If that's how much revenue non NFL events generate each year, it would take over 100 years for the roof to pay for itself. Outdoor stadiums can host the NHL Winter Classic, which has seated up to 70,000. There are older stadiums like Lambeau Field, Soldier Field, and Candlestick Park. They're all outdoors, and they're ancient. The reason they're still standing is because they're outdoors, and they're easy to remodel. Indoor stadiums become outdated quickly and then need to be replaced after 20-30 years. Build an outdoor stadium, one that Minnesota will be proud of for years to come.
