Is my once-curious friend gay?

I am gay and when me and my best friend were 12 we did a lot of experimenting almost all the time, and most of it he started. Now we are older and he is ashamed of it and refuses to talk about it. He identifies himself as heterosexual. Is he just really far in the closet, or was it all just a phase?
P.S. When we were younger he admitted that he was "going-gay" and needed a girl because he said he was "using me sexually".

what's he got to be ashamed of??? anyway, it may be he's buried himself in the closet, but maybe not. either way it doesn''t matter. he's your friend. and that's all both of you need to know. anything else is just there. best thing to do is probably just to leave it alone and see what happens, be there for him no matter what his decision.
