How useful is HTML5 on a smartphone?

I was comparing two phones (iPhone 4 and Blackberry Torch), and it turns out that only iPhone 4 has HTML5. So I was just wondering if I can still get a good browser experience without HTML5. Are there any major reasons why it's better to have HTML5 on a smartphone?

HTML5 is suppose to replace the use of flash videos on Flash Player, and suppose to run media alot faster and smoother than the previous versions. HTML5 is not fully finished yet, so be prepared to update a lot for the time being, but worth using in the long run.
