My laptop's Dvd writer and reader reads all the DvDs ans Cds as if they were empty! I even tried them on other computers and they work normally, don't know why or when.. please help

I want to make it to 0MB of free space, or read only, to make it locked so others cant write data on it.
I tried ImgBurn but it didn't work because it had already files in it. Can anyone help?
Whenever I insert a blank DVD-R disc into my mac, it goes in, makes a couple noises, and shoots it right out. I've tried a bunch of different discs, so I dont know what's up with my mac.
