Sudden bad smell, like tar, nail polish remover or burning plastic?

I was woken up tonight by the sudden onslaught of a very steong bad smell in the house. Its worst in the upstairs bedrooms. I also smell waves of it outside. Main question: should i be conserned that its harmful tonight? Also, what could be the cause?

I had a power supply for a TV burn up and caused a bad smell. The wires were not soldered in the connector and over a few years corrosion built up and the connection got hot enough to melt the plastic. I fixed it after I bought a new TV.

I would go around the house to smell an feel everything that is plugged in. Also smell and feel your electric breaker/fuse box. It may be inside your walls, but I doubt it.

Hopefully it is something outside like someone burning trash.
