just get a cheaper smart phone now? i have an ipod touch and i REALLY love it, so i can only imagine how much i would love an iphone.
BUT the thing is always always loose and break phones. And if i lost or broke an iphone, i might really kill myself (not literally but i would go insane).
Im thinking maybe i should start out with a cheaper driod phone and see how i can keep up with that (i've never had a smartphone before)

I have an iPhone with T-Mobile, I don't get what you mean. Well, T-Mobile merged with Orange to create EE but I got it whilst it was still known as T-Mobile. Seriously, I handle electronics (and anything really) really badly but my iPhone is my baby and I treat it nicely. Smartphones aren't all that hard to take care of, if you're paying for the phone you'll treat it better (in hindsight) so I'd just go for it if I were you.
