There are a few types of DVDs - DVD-ROM (read only memory) has data that can only be read and not written; DVD-R and DVD+R (recordable) can record data only once, and then function as a DVD-ROM; DVD-RW (re-writable), DVD+RW, and DVD-RAM (random access memory) can all record and erase data multiple times.
Your using a DVD-r disc meaning it can only record once - next time you buy discs check which one you select! :)

I have tried to add an iso image to a dvd-r but everytime I try the programs that I use always come uo with "disc not empty". Also whenever I try to erase the disc the message "disc is not re-writable" comes up. how do I erase this disc or make it re-writable?

You cannot do that practically. You simply have to use a blank DVD-R or a DVD-RW disc.

To make a DVD-R a DVD-RW, you would have to change the dye to an RW type, and the bits that identify it as R or RW.
