Can I get a 50s haircut/style with short/mid-length very fine hair?

I love the retro pin-up look (think Dita Von Teese) but I've never been sure if my hair could actually hold it. It's currently shorter at the back and longer at the front, with the shortest being around an inch below the back of my hairline and the longest at just about shoulder length. The problem is my hair is fine and I don't have a lot of it, so it doesn't curl very easily (or at least hasn't on the few attempts I've made so far) and goes flat after 10 minutes regardless of the amount of effort/product/time I put in to it! There's a great 50s style salon nearby that does exactly what I'm after, but at £65 a cut I'd want to be sure it's a look I can sustain and that would actually suit my hairtype...

Anyone have any idea whether I could make it work?!
