prompted him to abolish slavery? What came over him? Did a rock hit his head and knock some sense into him?
his intention was to preserve slavery in its original colonies, but simply stop it from spreading to new locations. right?

By ending slavery, Southern economy would be doomed and they could not survive without the north. He did everything he did in order to preserve the Union.
