Any good ideas to keep rocks out of your shoes while hiking/walking on the trail?

I walk on a bike trail, it is made of crushed limestone. I'm forever stopping to dump small pebbles from my shoes. I love that trail because it is level (rail trail), beautiful, and near my home. Have any ideas to keep the rocks from jumping in my shoes? May try wearing gators but was hoping someone would have a better idea!
Gaiters are kind of a sleeve for your leg. They have a cinch or draw tie at the top which would end somewhere up your calf, the bottom has a strap that goes under your boot/shoe. Typically they are used to keep bugs from going up your pantleg or snow from down the top of your boots. Just thought they would be hot and sweaty in the summer.
