Obama's election and the uptick in violence have a common cause, the economic collapse in 2008. But you know it wasn't steady. It levelled off again according to your link.

There is actually a correlation between unemployment and crime rates. This is a fact supported by research. Desperation, stress, and too much time drive people to commit crimes.

During Obama's first 1-2 years in office the unemployment rate went up. The unemployment rate was already going up before Obama took office.
