Why would a coffee pot turn into a ball of flames?

It practically burnt our house down! One minute we were just enjoying our morning cup of joe with the paper and the next our kitchen up in Flames ... why did it blow up?

The reason why in flames because theres a thermostat that went bad and did not cut off when it should. I do not understand about the blowing up part.

one it could have shorted out and started on fire. or the thing could have gotten to hot and the moter caught on fire prom extensive use.

Well, it mightve short circuited, and then burst into flames. Every so often you should buy a new coffee pot, bcuz after a year or two they usually stop working.
