Why won't cd/dvd drive on comp read cds/dvds?

I have a gateway, and it came with a cd/dvd r/rw, and it worked for most of 2 years, but one day it stopped reading. The green light turns on like it's reading somthing when I first put it in, but then it acts as if there isn't anything inside of it.

Try to go to My Computer and then double-click on the cd/dvd rom. I know you've probably already tried it, but who knows?
