Why mercedes...????(questions about the standard and optional equipment)?

Why mercedes doesnt have all airbags as standard?I mean at A,B,C,CLA class you have have the option to add 2 more airbags for the rear passengers.Why is this an option and not a standard?Why again,at A,B,C,CLA class the rear armrest is optional?Why is this an option and not a standard?At the end,why at S class u have the option(at least at europe)to order your vehicle with short or long wheelbase?I mean,you give 100k euros,why to buy this car with the short wheelbase?I think that long wheelbase should be a standard.Thank you for your answers.
