Why is my 97' Ford Escort Stalling?

My Ford Escort shuts off as soon as I slow down at a red light or stop sign. If it doesn't stall I try to hurry up and put it in neutral and gas it while I wait for the light to turn green. It has very high miles. I changed the oil hoping that would change things but it didn't..WHATS WRONG?!! Im taking it to an auto shop soon but I just want to try to figure out what the problem might be before I spend money. Thank you

sounds like low idle mixer, go to a local auto zone or such ask them to put the machine on it to determine if its the low idle mixer or choke sensor or? but do this and save a lot of money instead of going to a mechanic they are simple to install, save money and listen to me
