when you first meet a girl how do you be really nice but not a creep?

lets say i have a friend who brings a girl around how can i talk to her and crack jokes and be nice with out doing to much of it to freak her out

And, usually, just say hi. people say to use all these pickup lines and stuff, but honestly, if you want to talk to a girl (or anyonee!) just walk up and say hi, my name is _____, whats yours?
