What linguist discussed sexist language and attitudes?

I'm doing an English Language paper on gender and I'm sure I read somewhere that a certain linguist said something about, just because people adopt gender neutral terms does not mean their attitudes towards it have changed. I have Romaine in my head, but I can't seem to find anything online that suggest she said it. So does anyone know what linguist said this or has at least written on this topic. Or perhaps where I could go to find out?
