What better ways of dealing with nonviolent offenders are there?

The justice system in America and Europe are basically just "prison for X years", and while that makes sense for violent offense like murder, rape, assault, etc, it seems like a terrible idea for nonviolent offense, like most white collar crime. What would be some better alternatives to jail time for non-violent offenders?
