...I test it to be sure? The engine overheats when sitting in traffic and I don't see the fan turning, where is the electrical connection to test it?
My mate says it could also be the sensor, how do I find and test that?
 
Fan is generally pretty reliable, You need to check the fuse, the sensor and the relay. I would think the relay or fuse is the likely fault. With all the electronics on a car I wouldn't go poking around the wiring unless you really know what's where. I'd start with a look at a Haynes Manual
 
If you are talking about the electric fan, there should be a cable coming out of the thermostat. Remove the cable and start the car. If the fan works, it should fire up immediately since you have disconnected the sensor.
