the memory card needs to be in while you are taking the pictures, then take it out after you are finished taking the pictures and you can upload them. hope that you didn't lose too many pictures!
Most cameras have at least a little internal memory, pictures can be downloaded directly from the camera. Try downloading a free pict editing program like ArcSoft Print Creations 2.7. or Art Plus Digital Photo Recovery 4.1
Select your camera as the source of pictures, and hopefully you will be able to download them.
