Kincardine Pride has launched an initiative with the goal of raising awareness and showing support for the LGBTQ2S community. Rainbow Treats for Change came about after a number of small communities involved in Partners in Pride (an informal association of small Pride groups in southern Ontario, who share ideas and events) discussed how to best raise awareness of the upcoming International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. May 17 was chosen as the day of commemoration, as it was this day in 1990 the World Health Organization declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder. Kincardine Pride has been approaching local food-related businesses to consider adding a special rainbow item or treat to their menu, on or about May 17. Suggestions include baked goods, desserts or beverages. The food items can then be sold to the public. Should the business opt to donate the proceeds of the sale of these items, all funds will be directed to Kincardine Pride and used for future events (when permitted), event décor, activity supplies and publicity. Farther into 2021, if restrictions relax, Kincardine Pride may consider bringing LGBTQ/inclusiveness "edu-tainment to the community, such as the Saidat show, or t-shirts. Fort Papalia, president of Kincardine Pride, said he and the Pride committee are very pleased to see many businesses agreeing to participate, including The Kings Pearl Pub, Hawgs Breath, Watercress Bistro, and Kin Social. Nancy Alexander, owner of The King's Pearl Pub in Tiverton, says the restaurant likes to participate in all functions and events, including the Pride Parade. “We like to recognizes all the events,” said Alexander. “It’s great to reach out to the community and support all the groups.” Interested restaurants, stores, bakeries and other food-related businesses who wish to participate can contact Kincardine Pride for details at [email protected]. And for those that don’t own a business but want to participate and show their support, watch for the rainbow items offered around May 17 and pick up some delicious treats while supporting the LGBTQ2S community.
