I am going to buy one of these cars w/ a manual transmission and need help in my decision. It will be low-mileage, used, and on the Cayman, possibly CPO. Here are the factors of my decision:
SAFETY - Very important. Is either car significantly more safe than the other?
Practicality - Which car is better for everyday driving?
Maintainence costs - Which car is more reliable and costs less to maintain? The car I choose might be certified pre-owned, the year won't be any lower than '06 on the Cayman (S).
**DRIVING EXPERIENCE** - which car is the better sports car?
Engine noise - must be as loud as possible.
Fun - which car has greater fun potential?

Quick rundown: BMW 335i has a 300hp twin-turbocharged V6, heavier than Porsche
Porsche Cayman has a 245hp flat 6 engine, Cayman S has a 295hp flat 6 engine, whichever I would get would depend upon price/year.
EDIT: 335i has an I6, not a V6

Porsche cayman S
Consumer reports rates the cayman as one of the most reliable vehicles.
The Porsche Cayman is as safe as the 335i
The Porsche will be maybe $200 more to own
Porsche cayman in car and driver top 10 vehicle and one of the most fun cars
Porsche cayman is better, but I would consider myself lucky to drive either of these incredible cars

If you can get a Cayman S then get that but otherwise pick the 335i. The 335i still drives well but you will notice the weight handicap over the Porsche. However, it's a lot more practical and safer.

Would like to add 335i is a flat 6 aswell.
Cayman wins on
**DRIVING EXPERIENCE** - which car is the better sports car?
Engine noise - must be as loud as possible.
Fun - which car has greater fun potential?

Bmw wins on everything else.

Edit- err- err, i mean inline 6
