from our tv to come out the surround sound system. He has sound when he puts a movie in but he cant seem to figure out how to get the sound from the tv to the theatre system. what do we do?

Connect optical cable or red & white cables from cable box or TV to Home Theater System for TV channel audio.

Those home theater in a box are not very good and are not flexible for adding anything to them or for up grading. This is a common issue with consumers that buy one, then find out they can not connect the tv to it to hear the sound from the tv. They are mainly designed for you to watch a movie with surround sound on the built in player. Your tv only provides you with an optical audio output, this is a digital signal that has multi channel information and has to be decoded by a multi channel receiver, home theater in a box with an optical audio input or a sound bar. If you system does not have an optical audio input then you are not going to be able to hear the sound coming from the tv. Hope this will help you out.

You haven't connected the TV's audio output to the surround sound receiver. If you're going to buy cheap crap, it is even more important to do your homework before you buy & to Read The Flippin' Manual when you set things up. Next time, please supply brand names & models so people can answer without having to guess.

(sigh) This is about the 200th time someone has asked this same question since New Years.

Your BluRay system is a Disk Player.

It plays disks.

He gave up the ability to hook other things up to it for the low price.
