Long distance bike rides? which Bike ?

I have signed up to cycle from Lands end to John O Groats. What is the best bike for it? My budget is under £500. There is not going to be a support just me and the bike so i will have to carry everything. (Tent and all) i have seen alot of bikes out there but they all seem to cost a arm and leg !!

Can I hire?
2nd Hand?
How long will it take a novice rider?
