The Los Angeles Lakers will be honoring Shaquille O’Neal during the 2012-13 season by retiring his No. 34 jersey. While a member of the Los Angeles Lakers, Shaq won three NBA championships and three NBA Finals MVPs.

Said Dr. Jerry Buss, the owner of the Lakers: “Shaq had a long and amazing career, with a huge impact both on and off the court. His contributions were significant to the entire NBA, but we specifically appreciate what he did with and what he meant to the Lakers during his eight years with us.”

While the breakup of Shaq and the Lakers was ugly, both sides seem to have forgiven and moved on. The Lakers realize that without Shaq they would have three less championships.

“We have three championships that we wouldn’t have won without him,” added Buss, “and we will forever be grateful for his significant contributions to those teams.”

While with the Lakers, Shaq’s best season was the 1999-00 season. That season, he averaged 29.7 points, 13.7 rebounds and 3.0 blocks as he powered the Lakers to his first championship.
