I asked if it was "normal" for a printer/ scanner to be loud during all functions on Y!A and the answer I got was that it shouldn't make a sound when scanning.

But it does.

It's loud whilst preparing to scan, scanning, preparing to print, printing and depositing the page into the shoot... as well as turning itself off. Across the board it's noisy.

I got it free when I bought a laptop last year but I've only just opened the box and completed set-up. I had to locate the driver on the HP website because the software included wasn't compatible with Windows 8.

It wasn't jostled or improperly stored. I never dropped the box or anything. It was well-padded and had plenty of packing materials. Nothing rattled.

If it's loud does that translate into it's being defective..?
This is it:
