Is it better to take a few 3-4 day vacations or one 8-10 day vacation?

We do both! For example we have been to Antarctuca 3 times on small expedition cruise ships, typically 18 days away due to distance travelled/remoteness/sheer amount of things to see/do.

Conversely we often spend 2/3 nights in Scotland visiting a particular place/area/event.

So it is "horses for courses"
