Is downloading from torrents a Crime?

Hey guys recently i have lot of news that downloading from torrents is illegal and its a crime
I am from india.
i have been downloading movies n porn a lot .
Am i committing a crime???

It is if you're stealing copyrighted media which is 99% of the crap people torrent.

U frm india right.Then u must have no problem as u know it is our india.Its not a crime in our country.May be a crime in other countries...So u must not worry...just go on downloading tons and tons of data regularly..!!

If you are in India, you don't have much to fear. However it is unethical to torrent copyrighted material.

In a word, yes. In a longer explanation, you are pirating copyrighted material, which is illegal. If the material you downloaded said something along the lines of freeware or freely distribute, it wouldn't be illegal. however, movies and porn rarely go uncopyrighted.

That being said, it probably won't matter. I'm not sure what the copyright laws in india are, but if they are anything like the united states, then you might get a fine. but the law is rarely enforced. if you are using public internet to download, however, you may be found out early. my school has a system to notify administrators if illegal material is being downloaded. If you have been downloading stuff awhile, then you may be good. but be careful.
