yes.. quite obviously, it makes sense to seize a landlocked, mountainous country about the farthest you can get without infrastructure and make it your logistics base for further conquest..


actually that's what allies did in your universe in WWII, right? seizing Switzerland as a base for future operations to conquer nazi Germany
 
Hardly -- one might grab hold of a tiger's tail to save oneself from attack but that's the only reason to do so .
And then you still have the problem of how to let go .
 
No. It's fun to invade and occupy a desert wasteland where nothing interesting exists.
