How do I play a DVD movie on my laptop?

Sorry - I'm an old fogie of 62 and don't understand these things.
I've put it in but nothing happens. Help!

1. open up DVD tray

2. put cd in tray

3. close tray/run dvd

4. ???

5. profit

1. Put the DVD in the computer
2. Click the button in the bottom left corner of the screen that brings up a toolbar of programs
3. Choose computer
4. An icon of a disk and possibly the name of the disk should appear
5. Right click on this icon with your mouse
6. A grey menu should come up- scroll down this list and left click on play
7. This should hopefully open up your computer's default media/DVD player e.g. Windows Media Player or PowerDVD
