How do I get the music from iTouch to iTunes without it erasing the songs?

So my friend gave me his iPod touch to put music on it for him. I can do that however if I plug it in there's 2 errors. 1. It reads it as a camera, and 2. If I try to sync it it wants to delete all his stuff on it. So how can I get the music from the ipod onto my computer so they won't delete? I've looked all over and can't find how to do it.
It's an iPod touch 2nd gen I believe. I know how to get music on it, that's common sense. I need to know how to get the music already on it, onto my computer so it won't delete everything on it.
Let me re-phrase this. If anyone could either help me do what I asked, or possibly post a link to some kind of program that will let me transfer about 500 songs without buying the software would be a big help, thanks.
