How do i configure an iPhone 3 gs?

Recently got the above phone via ebay (shop) and unlocked but dont know how to set it up. I have put my sim into it (O2) but not getting any service....
All helpful suggestions will be gratefully recieved and if Im unable to sort it, it will be going back!!
Just need to set Wi Fi/Internet access up now so I can get onto the internet when I am out and about on my travels...any advice please
To New York Inc...my phone is from the UK...and factory unlocked according to the description of it. I now have O2 showing on it and just need to know how to be able to set it up onto the internet so I can use it where ever.........

That iPhone may use AT&T only. If that's the case, then the direction of your trouble-shooting needs to go in the direction of the service carrier...

It otherwise still should function as an iPod would - even if you cannot make calls on it - so long as you are not getting that "Connect to iTunes" screen.

What country is that iphone 3gs from?
if its from the USA,only att and tmobile will work on it,unless its unlocked.
