Why did the Philadelphia Eagles sign Sam Bradford?
On Wednesday the answer to that question might have changed a bit, as ESPN reported that the Eagles will sign quarterback Chase Daniel to a three-year deal. That contract ultimately could be worth as much as $36 million with incentives if Daniel can win the starting job.
[NFL free agency starts Wednesday. Here are Shutdown Corner's free-agent rankings for offensive players and for defensive players and specialists. Here are the top needs for all 32 NFL teams.]
Bradford opens as the favorite to start, but Daniel looks like a pretty good provisional plan if that fails to work well, and he might be able to push Bradford, who has only played 16 games twice in his six-year career. The Eagles will have a lot committed to the QB pool the next year at least, with Bradford costing them $26 million guaranteed over the next two seasons.
Daniel, the former Heisman Trophy finalist from Missouri, has thrown 77 passes in the NFL but appears to have an admirer in new Eagles head coach Doug Peterson. The two worked together with the Kansas City Chiefs, where Daniel was Alex Smith's backup and Peterson ran Andy Reid's offense.
Could Daniel push Bradford? Perhaps not right away, but if health becomes a concern (Bradford has a long history of injuries dating back to college), it would not be shocking to see the Eagles give the fiery Daniel a chance.
Coincidentally, Bradford owned Daniel in college, beating him twice in 2007 — the only two losses of Mizzou's season — and once in 2008 as Oklahoma's QB. Two of Bradford's victories over Daniel happened in the 2007 and 2008 Big 12 championship games.
Daniel has started only two NFL games (completing 37-of-57 passes for 357 yards and a TD in the two Week 17 games with the Chiefs) since entering the league with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2010, whereas Bradford has started 63. In 14 starts last season with the Eagles, Bradford threw for 19 TDs and 14 INTs. In Daniel's NFL career, he has one TD pass and only attempted two passes last season.
But Peterson seems to like something in Daniel, who has been unable to crack the starting lineup behind Smith and Drew Brees but who has some admirable traits. This might be a sneaky good QB battle to watch.
