I live on 5 acres and have chickens that have slowly been depleted by raccoons and coyotes. Though I grew up in Mich., camped etc., I never was made aware of this cooing like noise that I hear quite often at night around my property and I'm thinking its raccoons. I have tried shining them in the tree the noise is coming from but can never find the source. My brother in law says its a dove making the noise and it does sort of sound like a dove but doves aren't active at night to my knowledge. This sound sounds like a cross between a dove and a owl sort of. My husband says his grandpa kept a raccoon as a pet for a time when he was a kid and remembers that coon making a noise like what I hear. Anybody have some info? Its driving me crazy and my neighbors probably think I am prowling around shining the trees trying to protect my chickens.
