New research reveals that there were two different strains of bacterium that caused the global epidemic of Clostridium difficile between 2002 and 2006, not just one. The two strains developed a resistance to the frontline antiobiotic fluoroquinolone which was used to treat C. difficile infection until the early 2000s. The resistance to the treatment and the highly infectious spores the bacterium produces caused it to spread very quickly around the world.
