...parallel neanderthal/cro-magnon society? Human scientists open an underground portal to a parallel world inhabited by an advanced species of near-humans, the ones that humans beat out in our evolutionary line. The human travelers end up in a lawsuit and a native has to represent them. It was the first of a series. Can anyone remember the author or title, please?
