Alexander is stranded on an island covered in forest.

One day, when the wind is blowing from the west, lightning strikes the west end of the island and sets fire to the forest. The fire is very violent, burning everything in its path, and without intervention the fire will burn the whole island, killing the man in the process.

There are cliffs around the island, so he can't really jump off.

How can the Alexander survive the fire? (There are no buckets or any other means to put out the fire)

May the odds be forever in your favour

he lays in the stream from which he has been drinking (else he'd already be dead) and waits for the bush fire to burn past him.
then, he starves to death on the barren island, without even tree-bark to eat.
easy one that?

Alexander picks up a piece of wood and lights it from the fire on the west end of the island.

He then quickly carries it near the east end of he island and starts a new fire. The wind will cause that fire to burn out the eastern end and he can then shelter in the burnt bit.

Climb the cliff? And surely only the vegetation would burn so he could just clear an area and wait for the fire to burn off?

Being an island, it is a piece of land surrounded by water. So all the man has to do is stay in the water until the whole forest burns down. When there is just burnt ground left and all the forest is gone, the man can walk back onto the island and within time, the forest will grow back. Until then to survive, the man can catch fish for food and capture rainwater to drink.
