Can a DVD player take on the characteristics of another Electronic piece of

equipment it's sitting on? My Blu-Ray player is sitting on the cable box for our tv.It has a DVR.When I use my receiver for my Blu-ray player the receiver doesn't recognize the Blu-ray as a DVD,It recognizes it as a DVR.
Is there a way to remedy this situation?
