Any civilization capable of reaching our planet will undoubtedly also be capable of destroying us just as easily.

I would therefore elect the most pacifist speaking members of worldwide governments to attempt and negotiate with the aliens to determine if their attempt was colonization, destruction, or recreation. Hopefully it would be the latter. We could form some sort of bond with them to advance our civilization or at least protect it from other interstellar forces.
