getting more from weights (free) lifting sets/reps?

hello.

started lifting weights (just free weights) few weeks ago. just going for basic increase in strength and endurance.

id love info on the number of sets and reps i should be doing how often etc. atm i just do as many of one type till i cant do any more than change. i'm thinking this isn't the best way?

also lifting every second day and drinking home made protein drink after each session is right?

(unfortunately i only got one set of weights (12lb) and cant afford equipment or gym membership atm)
