Why do people get upset by an insult over the internet?

I mean come on, it's just a frikkin' screen! Whether it's some forum site or Yahoo Answers, I've seen people be insulted and influenced by what others say about them. How they you let a person(who you'll NEVER see in your lifetime) upset them and anger them? Why not laugh? It's just plain silly.
 
I just cant believe how rude some person can be to someone they've never taken a chance to know. like you said "we'll never see them in our lifetime" which gives the ever more reason to be hurt by words. Most of us are upset to begin with and then people just try hurting us to make it worse
 
I think it's more that they are disgusted by the cowardice of it. They believe that the person wouldn't say that to them in real life, and they're probably right.
 
because people are sensitive, words do knock one's confidence....it's not necessary for others to be hurtful and nasty...........
