laptop dvd drive will not read movie discs, yet does read data, music and movies off

of cd's and dvd's.? pretty much sums it up, it will not read (or more specifically, detect) movie discs, either purchased or rented off of redbox for example but does function when playing dvd games, it reads data files, movie files etc off of cd's and dvd's and performs all other functions just fine. I have all updates, tried using VLC, windows media etc, but again the issue seems to be that it isn't detecting that type of disc period. not a codec or software issue. I have re-installed the drivers and device, and run the troubleshooting/fixit app off of the microsoft website. I have an hp pavillion dv6700. any help would be appreciated.
