Why do religious people feel so strongly when someone questions their belief?

Say I ask on Yahoo! answers.. "does god really exist?" and give a fair argument.. I could give some decent evidence to support my questioning. But in a reply from a group of religious group, I bet at least a couple of them will quote a religious text of some kind as if it's absolute and as real and true as gravity is gravity.

This is just a theory, call it a breif amateur assessment of human psychology, but don't people usually get defensive about something when they're not truly sure or somehow insecure about whatever it is they're defending?

I just don't see why religious people get so angry at Agnostics who aren't questioning religion necessarily because they believe it's false. but the reason we ask is often more to do with simple curiosity, and quite simply, we can often be mistaken for Atheist because sometimes we may take the scientific side because lets face it.. who has more hard evidence of anything?
