He's of mixed British and Indian ancestry, and therefore is a little lighter in skin tone than your average Indian. Therefore, it is entirely possible.
Italians are especially quick to make these kind of errors, as in a way to be sociable, they would try to claim a person they like as one of their own. (I once heard an Italian say of Roy Clark, a country-western singer, "must be" Italian.)
