some Conservatives whining? Bush showed school kids that brains were not necessary to be President. Reagan showed them that even a D actor and old man with Alzheimer's could be President. How could Obama hurt them by telling them to stay in school.? Since all he is saying is study hard and stay in school, I see nothing wrong with that-do you?. I do see the ones protesting as embarrassments to most Americans though. Why don't they just let their kids stay home. Of course this should be marked as a day absent however since there is no "stupidity" rule for those to miss school.
You will need as source for that Gephart qoute as Obama is not speaking politically to these kids. Even if he did. I would not care as my grandchildren are smart enough to think for themselves.

It is one more example of how unhinged the right wing has become. It also shows how hateful and unamerican they have become.

They are teaching their kids that it is allright to disrespect the president of the united states. And they wonder why they have lost the culture war. It is because they cannot hide the fact that the "culture" they promote includes a lot of hate.

Obama has nothing of any value to say to students or teachers, or American workers either for that matter.

Obama escalates assault on public education

On Friday, President Barack Obama announced an assault on public education that would go beyond the Bush administration’s “No Child Left Behind” program. He outlined an education “reform” that would link teacher pay to the test performance of students and force state governments to shift funding from established public schools to so-called charter schools.

Obama spoke on Friday at the Department of Education, unveiling a $4.3 billion “competition” among the states for federal grants, named “Race to the Top.” Money from the fund would be awarded to only a handful of states that best promote “innovation”— charter schools and merit-based pay among teachers. States that forbid these policies, such as California, New York, and Wisconsin—home of the nation’s highest-ranked education system—would be barred from consideration.

Obama and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan presented the $4.3 billion as if it were an extraordinary amount of money. But it is tens of billions less than has been doled out to individual banks, such as Goldman Sachs, in Obama’s bailout of the finance industry. It is also less than the personal fortunes of about 90 Americans, according to the Forbes 400 list of 2008. Nor does it meet the desperate needs of cash-starved public education; the Detroit public school system alone has a deficit of $400 million.

This relative pittance would do little even if it were distributed equitably. But that is not Obama’s intention, as he made clear. “Rather than divvying it up and handing it out, we are letting states and districts compete for it,” he said. “That’s how we can incentivize excellence and spur reform and launch a race for the top in America’s public schools.”

Like a master dropping a bone among his starving dogs, the Obama administration is openly provoking a bitter competition among states and school districts for paltry funding.

Continued . . .

Well Cons will whine over anything Obama does. This is only good news for us Democrats as more and more people see that the Cons are not serious or for that matter sane enough to deal with we will just drop them completely and never deal with them again. Where are the Republicans on this, why haven't they condemned this?

They fear their children are as easily influenced by left-wing politicians as they are by right-wing politicians.

It's not just conservatives. Prove otherwise please. And other presidents have spoken to schools, but they didn't include lesson plans and how to HELP THEM PERSONALLY with their agenda.

In the lesson plan, given to teachers by the WHITE HOUSE, it has the students write letters to themselves asking "how they can help Obama." Thats why.

When you are engulfed in racist hate nothing Obama does is ok, including something as innocent as asking kids to stay in school.
God Bless

Because they are worried Obama is also going to attempt to talk about his political agenda. They also don't like the fact that the government is sending along lesson plans for the speech. They aren't comfortable with MORE government intruding upon the classroom. I'll admit, this is pretty dumb since it appears that Obama just wants to talk about education. However, Obama should release a transcript of the speech so people will be able to tell whether or not it contains anything political. This speech is potentially the only good thing he's done in his presidency so far. Also, to say conservatives are crazy is astounding. Have you ever heard Nancy Pelosi talk?

Put the shoe on the other foot. What if a very conservative republican president were doing this? Would liberals keep their children home?

What if you knew that after the talk your child might be verbally abused by the teacher in front of his/her friends because of their political beliefs? What if you knew your child would face discrimination? Would you send them to school that day?

What if their political opinion influenced their grade or the way they were treated at school?

Imagine if we were talking about religious beliefs, color or sexual orientation. If we are all equal, why are some liberals so nasty to people with different political ideas - even children. (look at what's written here in these answers!)

Here is one of many articles on how conservative students are being marginalized on college campuses:

But it's happening all the way down to the elementary school level as can be seen in this video where a teacher belittles a grade schooler and then tells her that if she votes republican her father (a soldier in Iraq) won't be home for 100 years:

Actually you have no idea what BO will be telling them. He has not released his speech or talking points.

So until you ACTUALLY know what is being said, you should not make such claims.

hmmm because republicans are anti-education maybe? it sure seems like it sometimes

Maybe the parents just don’t want their children to learn to “pledge to serve Obama”.

Lib hypocrisy!!!!

“The Department of Education should not be producing paid political advertising for the president, it should be helping us to produce smarter students,” said Richard Gephardt, then the Democratic majority leader in the House of Representatives.”

Becouse there to lazy and they want everything there way, i mean grow up people, its for ur own good get a life with a good job!

Well not to point out the most obvious thought here, but you do realize that the speech has not been given yet. Right? Therefore your proclamation about what he is going to say is no better than the proclamations from the other side. I suspect that his speech will be pretty innocuous in content. Especially with all the furor it has caused, but it does not change the basic truth of the fact I have stated here.

Because that is not what he is doing . He figured out that most American adults do not buy his lies and he needs to take advantage of kids to talk his Liberal nonsense !!
