My friend and I both live in Alberta and have Alberta numbers, but he is currently in Ontario right now. I use Telus and he uses Rogers. Because both our numbers have the same area code, I don't have to dial 1 before his number, even though he's outside of the province right now.
My home phone has a long distance plan. If I called him, would he be charged long distance?
