It’s only April, but the San Diego Padres may have just experienced the highlight of their 2017 season. In Monday’s game against the Colorado Rockies, first baseman*Wil Myers became the first player to hit for the cycle this season.

But where many normally fail, Myers came through. On the third pitch of the at-bat, Myers smacked an 87 mph slider from Carlos Estevez to left center. The ball*was unplayable for left fielder Gerardo Parra, and rolled all the way to the wall. Myers must have known what was at stake, because he was hustling hard from*the moment he hit the ball.

Though relay man Trevor Story bobbled the throw from Parra, it didn’t really matter. It looked like Myers would have easily made it to third on the hit even with a perfect strike to Story.
With the feat, Myers becomes the second player in franchise history to hit for the cycle. He joins Matt Kemp, who hit the first cycle in franchise history*against … drum roll, please … the Rockies!
The hit made Myers a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, with two runs scored and two RBI during the*team’s 5-3 win.
The Padres may be rebuilding, but their one constant for the next couple years will be Myers. The team signed the-26-year-old to a*six-year, $83 million extension in the offseason, making him the face of the franchise.
It may have only been one game, but he lived up to that billing Monday.*Little is expected of the Padres this year, but Myers*managed to give*fans at least one memory of 2017 they’ll never forget.
